Tips for Safely Installing Christmas Lights on your Roof

It’s almost that time of year again… Christmas! One of our favourite things about Christmas is the bright lights that pop up around the suburbs of Brisbane.

If you’re decorating your house for Christmas this year, it’s important to stay safe. In this blog, we’re sharing some quick tips on how to install lights on your roof this December.

Safety First

While it can be tempting to jump straight into the fun part, there are a few things you should check first. The Queensland Government recommends you follow these steps:

  • Buy Australian Compliant Christmas lights
  • If you’re using last year's lights, make sure you’ve checked for any damage
  • Don't make modifications to the lights
  • Make sure your fire alarm and safety switch are in working order
  • Ensure you have the correct equipment (lights, powerboards etc) for your environment (inside or outside)

Wait for Clear Weather

Before you hang your lights, check the weather. If it’s windy or rainy, then it’s best not to be climbing a ladder. Wait until a clear day, and hang your lights in early morning or late afternoon to avoid that hot summer sun. Also make sure to have a friend who can hold the ladder to keep you safe.

Wear Enclosed Shoes

When you’re hanging lights, or anytime that you’re climbing ladders and walking on the roof, it’s important that you wear enclosed shoes. They should have no-slip soles to grip the surface. Make sure to also stay aware of your surroundings when you’re up on the roof to avoid falling.

Avoid Staples

When hanging your lights, you may be tempted to bring out the stapler or nails to get your lights to stay in the correct position. This could actually damage the wiring (or your roof) and lead to a higher chance of something going terribly wrong. Instead, try using some zip ties to secure your lights.

Ensure your Roof is in Good Condition

If you’re installing lights on your roof, it’s important to ensure that it’s in good condition. If your roof has cracks, leaks, or missing tiles, then you should get it repaired. Being proactive and repairing your roof early, before it becomes a serious problem, is the best way to protect your home.
