Outdoor living spaces: Pergolas

RooRoofing-Pergola.jpg

Call them pergolas, pagodas, mini outdoor bungalows...for the purpose of this blog we’ll just refer to them as pergolas, but whatever you name them, these outdoor living spaces are more than just something to add to the aesthetics to your home and backyard. They’re also great features all on their own, allowing owners to relax outdoors in a space that is inviting, comfortable and offers privacy. In this post, we share some photos to inspire you when designing your own pergolas.

Practical solution for outdoor spaces

Freestanding or attached to your home, a pergola is usually designed to be a shaded relaxation area with added privacy.

Consider having pergola curtains, for both privacy and wind protection. Match the curtain fabric to the canopy fabric and the result is a stylish and practical outdoor room. Side curtains also protect from that low evening sun that can still be strong mid-summer. Side curtains will be a welcome addition to the shading package that is right for you.

Comfortable Areas

Having comfy furniture to relax, entertain, and dine on can make your outdoor pergola enjoyable and look great too!

Closer to nature

By definition a pergola is a structure or archway with a framework covered in climbing plants.

A Shady place to rest

Pergolas have been built for centuries to protect from the sun and provide shade.

You could use shade cloth (commonly used for greenhouses). It provides a pretty good solution for protection from the sun. However, in some cases it may not be aesthetically pleasing or complimentary to your pergola.

Shelter from the rain

Rain protection is another feature that is highly desirable in a perfect pergola. For example, a single piece of retractable fabric covering the area under a pergola is ultra-convenient and provides the extra measure of rain protection as well. The ability to retract the shade cover at any time allows for the enjoyment of the sun during those special early days of the summer season when the sun is still kind and welcome. Then when the sun gets too hot you simply extend the canopy for full shade and full protection from UV.

Its having characteristics like these that encourage spending more time outdoors and that’s what the South East Queensland lifestyle is all about. For more inspirations:
