4 famous rooftop moments

Whether it's in film, games or real life, there have been some truly spectacular moments that have all taken place on or revolved heavily around the vicitinity of rooftops.

In today's blog, we've listed some of favourite rooftop moments, from the explosive scene in Die Hard to the tense mutli-rooftop shootout in Uncharted 2. If you have any favourites of your own, be sure to share them with us in the comments below.

1. Die Hard

"Yippee ki-yay..." We can't really say the last part, but it's hard to deny that the iconic 1988 action film Die Hard had an amazing - and now iconic - rooftop scene. Set atop the fictionalised Nakatomi Plaza (which is actually the Fox Plaza in real world LA), the film's famously wise-cracking and unhinged hero John McClane is being hunted down by FBI snipers. With the rooftop rigged with C4 and about to explode (the doing of the terrorists who have taken over Nakatomi Plaza), McClane ties a firehose around his mid-section and takes a leap of faith off the side of the rooftop to avoid the sniper fire.

As he jumps, the C4 goes off, the blast enveloping and destroying the FBI helicopter. McClane hits into the side of the building and eventually manages to get in by shooting the glass windows and smashing through. It's just one of many tense and exhilarating scenes that have earned Die Hard's reputation as possibly one of the best action movies of all time.

2. The Room

From the famously good to the famously so-bad-it's-good, we have The Room. The brainchild of eccentric filmmaker Tommy Wiseau (whose place of birth, year of birth and the exact origins of his accent remain a mystery to this day), the film is a cult phenomenon and considered among many to be the best worst film of all time.

The dialogue is often nonsensical, the acting stilted, the quality of shots questionable, and many lines of dialogue have clearly been redubbed as the original takes simply didn't work.

Despite its name, many scenes in The Room don't take place in any specific room. In fact, many randomly take place on a mock rooftop that was crudely constructed in an LA parking lot with green screens around it despite the fact Tommy Wiseau could've used the rooftop of a building he actually owned in San Francisco (the city in which the film is set).

These scenes range from a creepily awkward conversation between the character Johnny and Mark (in which Johnny laughs over the story of a woman being physically abused - see above), the character Denny being confronted by a drug dealer he apparently owed money to (this story thread is never mentioned again), and Mark almost killing a character who accuses him of sleeping with Johnny's future wife - but Mark says sorry and everything is perfectly fine between them one second later.

These rooftop scenes aren't just famous for how weird and comedically dumbfounding they are. They're also famous because of how low budget the entire production feels - despite the fact that it was an independent film with a $6 million budget.

3. High-wire walk between the Twin Towers

Moving away from movies (though this daredevil act now has a movie about it), we turn our attention to Philippe Petit, who performed a high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre for a total of 45 minutes on the morning of 7 August, 1974. In total, he made eight passes along the wire, which included him walking, dancing, lying down on the wire, and knelt down on it to salute those watching from the streets below. Petit's efforts were not authorised, but he escaped charges in exchange for performing a free aerial show for children in Central Park.

A couple of movies have been based off Petit's daring feat, the most recent of which is The Walk, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Petit himself helped Gordon-Levitt train for the role.

4. Desperate Times - Uncharted 2

For our final entry to the list, we turn our attention to video game Uncharted 2. There may have been a time when video games weren't one of the biggest entertainment mediums in the world, but that rule simply doesn't apply anymore. This is particularly evident by Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, a PlayStation 3 game (which will release on PS4 this month), which has sold more than 6 million copies worldwide and been considered one of the greatest video games of all time.

One iconic moment in the game takes place along building rooftops in Nepal. What makes this particular moment so tense, however, is that the player is being constantly pursued by an armed helicopter. They must take out enemies, avoid helicopter fire, and even fight through a building as it collapses. It's tense, exciting gameplay and solidifies Uncharted 2's rooftop shootout as one of the best moments in the game.
