Pros and Cons of Steel Roofs

Choosing the right material for your roof is critical for how you want your home to look and feel.

Depending on the climate where you live, and how much you want to spend, a steel roof can be a good idea. Here’s a look into some of the pros and cons of steel roofs.

The Pros of Steel Roofs

  • Long-lasting: Metal roofs can last 40-70 years, depending on the material.
  • Durable: Steel roofing is good at withstanding weather conditions like wind, rain and snow without needing costly maintenance.
  • Safe: Steel roofing will not spark during lightning or bushfires.
  • Energy Efficient: Steel roofs reflect sunlight that contributes to roof surface radiant heat, which can result in a 10-25% reduction in cooling costs.
  • Environmentally friendly: Steel roofs not only have 25-95% recycled content, depending on the material used, but are also 100% recyclable at the end of their life.

The Cons of Steel Roofs

  • Expensive: Steel roofing is much more expensive than other materials, but is worth the investment long-term due to its longevity.
  • Noisy: Steel roofs can be noisy during storms, rain and hail
  • Expansion & Contraction: Climate conditions like heat and cold can mean that a steel roof needs maintenance due to expansion and contraction.
  • Inconsistent colours for repairs or renovation: If a repair or renovation is needed years later, it may be hard to match the exact colour.
  • Potential for rust, dents and leaks: Cheaper grades of steel are used, they may be susceptible to rust and leaks over time. Steel also dents easily from hail.
