How your roof can help you stay warm in winter

warmth-in-winter-concept

The second month of winter will be here in a few hours, with temperatures likely to continue dropping.

Compared to last year, Brisbane has actually faced some fairly significant cool days so far. While it doesn't necessarily mean we'll be facing intense chills, it does mean the remainder of winter could bring with it a fair share of shiver-inducing days.

In regards to your home, there are a number of methods you can take to keep things a little warmer. For this blog, we won’t be looking at the obvious choices such as heaters or air conditioning, but rather focusing on how your roof can help keep your house warm.

How your roof can help maintain warmth in winter

The roof that sits above our heads is there to protect us from the elements. As long as you have a roof that’s in good condition, those less-than-desirable weather conditions aren’t going to have the opportunity of really affecting your life. Of course, this you already know.

The roof helps keep the cold out. With a good solid roof, you’ll be able to make your home more pleasant to live in during the colder months. That said, it doesn’t just come down to your roof. You should also be making a concerted effort to let the sun in during the day. But keep in mind that opening your windows can allow cool air to get inside. You need fresh air, but aim to have it come in via windows where strong breezes are less common. More importantly, make sure to close up when the sun sets as the air will get colder.

Just remember that any efforts you make to warm up your place during winter will be less effective if your roof isn’t in good condition. Think of it this way. You’re closing up the doors and windows at night, but you have some holes in your roof and, therefore, cool air is entering in through there. The cooler your roof void becomes, the more that temperature will impact on the rest of your home’s current temperature. After all, cool air always makes it way lower and lower. While using an air conditioner can control the temperature, remember that having an excessive amount of cold air in your roof void/ceiling space means your air conditioner will need to work extra hard to combat that cold.

While it may seem like a slight impact, a poorly maintained roof will affect how efficiently you can maintain more ideal temperatures. The better the condition of you roof, the more easily you can maintain warmth inside the home.

Other steps to warming up your home

As we’ve already mentioned, the likes of heaters and air conditioners can help, and a roof in tip-top shape is a must. However, given how expensive electricity bills can be, there are other steps you can take. In this case, it once again involves your roof.

In this event, we’re talking about roof insulation. Depending on the type of insulation you opt for, it can reduce the amount of heat you lose in your home by up to 60%. When installed by a qualified professional, insulation presents no dangers.

While insulation has an initial cost, it will help reduce your reliance on heaters and air conditioning, which will in turn help drive down your electricity bills in the long run.
