Cottage on a roof: NYC's hidden gem

When living in the city, it's not uncommon to hear people speak of their dreams of one day living a relaxed life, perhaps in a cottage with room for a vegetable garden.

Sometimes, though, it can lead to a conflict - how do I stay in a place full of life while also having a quieter and more country-like place to come home to? Well, while it may not cater for both aspects perfectly, New York couple David Puchkoff and Eileen Stukane have created the next best thing: a porch and meadow constructed on the roof of a six-story apartment building in West Village, Manhattan.

A country home with a city view

The porch of on top of the roof is essentially a bulkhead that was constructed over a hole that was punched into the ceiling of the family's loft, making way for a nautical staiway that leads to a landing and, eventually, a door out to the roof.

The couple asked their architect friend, Lawrence Tobe, to design the porch and accompanying garden/meadow. Given its position on an apartment building roof, the gardens utilise a green roof design to foster the healthy growth of the gardens while ensuring the roof can handle the extra weight.

While this hidden slice of country in the city that never sleeps has been around since 2006, it was only recently that photographer George Steinmetz spotted the space while aboard a helicopter that the public has become more widely aware of its existence. In a city filled with so many buildings, many of which feature their own brilliant rooftop green spaces, it's understandable how this great space has gone by relatively unnoticed.

Of course, NYC isn't the only place with amazing rooftop spaces. If you have any you think deserve a mention, be they in Brisbane or abroad, be sure to tell us about them in the comments below.
