Renovation Shows: The Mid-Year TV Fever

We touched on the craze of renovation shows in Australia earlier this year, and we still can't get over them. In this post we elaborate on some of the top renovation TV shows to see why they're so popular.

  • Do you day-dream about redoing your entire house?
  • Are you always looking for something to fix, redecorate or change?
  • Do you scour the internet for furniture you'll never actually buy?
  • Do you drop plans just to watch another episode of your favourite renovation show?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, there’s a big chance you’re already addicted to home renovation shows. You're probably wondering what makes these programs so engaging and addictive.

Like the rise of cooking shows, home renovation shows have a special place in Australian's hearts (and viewing habits). Shows like the English 'Grand Designs' have swept the country, and it's not just DIY home builders who have fallen in love, those with creative minds and obsessions for everything design, architecture, and interior design are watching these shows in their millions.

The magic of these shows is that they are aspirational - giving people home design inspiration even if they can't do it themselves. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing before and after shots of home renovations.

Here are some home renovation shows you won’t want to miss (you’re probably binge watching them already) - and the things we love about them:

The Property Brothers

Re-runs are airing on 9Life. This show consists of twin brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott, who take on house quests to help people get their dream house.

With Jonathan (a licensed contractor and also the one who does the designs and renovations) and Drew (a real estate agent), what could go wrong for homebuyers? The two are great partners in crime, and they do share handy renovation tips for the audience.

Their show also comes with different spin-offs, one of which is “Brother vs Brother”. In this popular addition, the twins compete with each other to renovate investment properties.

Selling Houses Australia

This show is probably one of the oldest and still running home renovation shows. Presented by Andrew Winter, together with the Selling Houses team, the show is a hit, particularly with people dreaming about selling their homes. The team renovate houses in Australia to then be sold, while giving viewers tips and ideas for home DIYs and inspiration for house selling, all with a hint of what it's like to work with real estate agents.

House Rules

If you like The Block, then this show is for you. House Rules is a reality show that follows six pairs who compete through home renovations - the twist is that they have to renovate each other's homes. The team who gets the highest points wins life-changing prizes (plus they get their home renovated in the process).

In this show, not only can you get lots of ideas from different people, but you can also see the real challenges that come with renovating a house.
