Factors going into Rooftop Pools

Before we go to the list, we wanted to share with you a few of most basic considerations:

• The weight - owners need to consider the structure and to reinforce the building to hold the weight of the volume of water in your pool. The pool must be shaped in a way that evenly transfers the weight of the water to the supporting walls and columns. Essentially you are replacing your roof with a rooftop pool.

• Environmental forces - engineers must account for wind load and rain too.

• Material - Concrete, for the pool in your backyard, is prone to cracking and isn’t a wise choice on top of a building especially when there are people living below.

• Insulation - If there’s a leak that could damage the structure.

• Infrastructure - how are you going to light up your pool inside? How are you going to keep the pool clean? (filters, pumps etc.) All that water must get filtered and purified. The busier the pool, the faster every bit of water must recirculate.

• Design - in connection with functionality - for example, the deck surrounding a rooftop pool shouldn’t be slippery; improperly secured objects can be a hazard (e.g loose deck chairs could fly around when the wind picks up); You have to make the pool easy to access and easy to get to and from especially in cases of emergency.
