16 roofing disasters waiting to happen

Roo Roofing's resident Roof Doctor takes a look at 16 different roofs with a whole range of very different problems. But they all have one key thing in common - without a proper repair/replacement, they're all disasters waiting to happen.

1. 80 years' worth of dust. Call Roo Roofing and we will vacuum out all that dangerous lead dust, soot and vermin poop.

2. One big storm away from being in the neighbour’s yard. Lawsuit, anyone?!

3. NO, putting more silicone on it won’t stop it from leaking. Should've called Roo Roofing and had it repaired correctly the first time. That would have been a lot cheaper than the now required cost of repairing the structural damage that has been done since the last dodgy silicon repair was done by the local handy man.

4. Believe or not, this damage was caused by a mild hail storm. Often your home insurance will pay to repair this sort of damage. Did you check your roof for damage after the last storm?

5. Don’t continue the frustrating failure of roof patches. You'd be surprised at how economical it is to replace the roof and rectify the construction faults that caused the problem in the first place.

6. Slipping valley tiles can cause significant water ingress. Call Roo Roofing and we will make sure the tiles are reinstalled correctly or, if damaged, replace and then support and refix the tiles so it doesn’t happen again.

7. Not having gutters flowing correctly and in good order will do significant damage to the fascia and soffits. Roo Roofing will fix the roof, gutters fascias and soffits.

8. Helpful hint. No point in just fixing the ceiling. Fix the roof first, then the ceiling. Roo Roofing can do both.

9. Engaging Roo Roofing means you don’t need to get a Carpenter and a Roofer as we are both, and a Licensed Builder. We can do it all.

10. As in the photo, barge rolls at the end of window awnings are going to hold water and rot the timber support at the base of the sheets of the awning. When rectifying, it is okay to install barge rolls to the sides of the awning, but do not reinstall the barge roll to the bottom or you will have the same result as in the photo.

11. This job was done by an unlicensed ‘tradesman’ (the word tradesman is used very loosely in this context). Believe it or not, the homeowner actually paid more than what it would've cost to do it properly. Then they had to pay a real tradesman to fix it. It pays to ensure you're engaging a reputable trade business that is QBCC licensed.

12. Gutters between main house roofs and patio roofs are rarely leak-free unless designed correctly from the start. If you’re wondering if a bit of silicon and silver flashing tape will fix it, that is a definite NO.

Roo Roofing can rectify these problems with a bit of planning, restructuring and custom-designed and made flashings.

13. The bubbles on the asbestos soffit is caused by the leaking roof above. So if your soffit is bubbly like this, your roof is stuffed and is likely doing considerable damage to the structure underneath.

14. This roof would be in the running for the worst roof in Brisbane. It's got all the qualifying attributes to win. Degrading asbestos roof; flat, rusty galvanised corrugated roof; and a gutter that can’t hold water but is really good at holding leaves.

15. Two hazards in one: falling soffits and exposure to asbestos.

16. Can we fix this? Yes we can!
