Brisbane weather warning: Heavy rain, potential flooding

brisbane-storm-rain

News has recently emerged that Brisbane has a high likelihood of encountering heavy rainfall and potential flooding towards the end of this week, primarily on Thursday (19 February) and Friday (20 February).

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a warning which notes many parts of Queensland south of Rockhampton could be in for some significant rainfall, ranging anywhere between 100 to 200 millimetres. Some areas could even experience heavier rainfall than that. As part of its warning, BOM has asked residents to be prepared for the potential of flooding in affected areas during this time.

The forecast

The heavy rainfall is being fuelled by a low currently lying southeast of Papua New Guinea, in the monsoon trough. Below is a screenshot of the BOM's forecast for Brisbane on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Being prepared

Remember that your best defence when severe weather conditions are approaching is to simply prepare. We've written an extensive eBook on how to be prepared during storm season, and you can download it by clicking here or on the images at the top and to the side of this page.

However, some quick tips to remember include:

  • Make sure loose outdoor furniture is brought inside to prevent it from becoming a potential airborne hazard
  • If you're in a flood-prone area, purchase sand bags to create a barrier around your home so that the flow of flood water is reduced/stopped
  • Again, if in a flood prone area, take whatever important items you have that could be severely damaged by flood waters and place them on higher shelves or even temporarily store them at a family or friend's place that is less likely to be flooded
  • If you haven't already, purchase and/or prepare some essentials such as food, water, torches (and batteries for the torches), first aid supplies, etc. These could help tide you over if you lose power or can't step outside due to flooding or other damage
  • When a storm hits, do not go outside. Stay indoors and wait it out. If you're out and about at the time a storm does hit, either try to find nearby shelter or secure yourself inside your vehicle in an area away from creeks, trees and an excessive number of powerlines
  • If you're worried your street could flood and your car could sustain damage, consider parking it on higher ground or dropping it off at the house of friends or family where they have shelter and are situated above the floodline.
