What is Asbestos and Should you Replace your Asbestos Roof?

Asbestos was a very popular roofing material in Brisbane until it was banned due to health concerns. This means if you have an older home, it’s highly likely to have asbestos in its roof.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring mineral fibres which were used extensively in many products due to their versatility, strength, fire resistance and insulating properties of the fibres.

Asbestos was used in Australia from 1950 to 1985 for building homes, schools, shops, hospitals and more. It was also used for manufacturing vehicles, plant and machinery, and in heating and cooling systems. Approximately one third of all homes built in Australia contain asbestos products.

Despite its useful properties, asbestos was banned in Australia in 2003 because of health risks. If your home is made of asbestos, you may be wondering if it’s dangerous for your family’s health.

Is Asbestos harmful for my health?

The good news is that simply living or working in a building containing asbestos is not dangerous as long as the asbestos is in good condition.

The danger comes when the asbestos is damaged or disturbed and its fibres are released. When you breathe in these fibres, this can damage your lungs, leading to serious health conditions in the long term.

Asbestos-related illnesses can include lung cancers, lung scarring or inflammation. The likelihood of a person developing an asbestos-related illness depends on a number of factors, including:

  • Duration and frequency of exposure to airborne asbestos fibres
  • Concentration or levels of asbestos in the air breathed
  • Individual susceptibility
  • Size and type of asbestos fibres
  • Other factors like smoking

The risk is much higher for people who work with asbestos than for people who live in an asbestos building. This is why we have special techniques for safely handling and removing asbestos.

Remember, if your roof is in good condition, then there’s nothing to worry about.

Do I need to replace my Asbestos Roof?

Although getting your asbestos roof and gutters replaced is expensive, it’s well worth it for the benefits. Here are some reasons why you should get your roof replaced:

  • The more weathered your roof gets, the more likely it is to deteriorate and become harmful to your health
  • Having an asbestos roof can make your home more difficult to sell
  • Homes with asbestos roofs are harder and more expensive to insure
  • Replacing your roof can add value to your home
