Tile Vs Metal Roofs

When it comes to choosing the right type of roof for your home, there are a lot of different things to take into consideration.

If you're finding yourself in this current dilemma when it comes to choosing between a tiled roof or a metal roof, we've put together a selection of points that you can look at to help you make up your mind. What we can say is that regardless of which style you ultimately go for, both are great choices.

Strength

When it comes to choosing a strong, weather-resistant roof, both tiled roofs and metal roofs are pretty equally matched. A huge contributing factor is the fact that new technologies have allowed both types to achieve a level of resistance and overall lifespan that was never possible in the past. Even if you go back around 20 to 30 years, metal roofs had serious issues with rusting. Now, however, the metal sheeting used on homes and commercial buildings is rust-proof. Similarly, tiled roofs were far weaker 30 years ago than they are now. So no matter which type of roof you opt for, both are going to be nice and tough.

Sound Reduction

Sound reduction is where tiled and metal roofs can differ, because it simply comes down to the difference in materials. While both will be relatively effective at keeping your day-to-day outside noises quiet, - such as passing traffic - it's a different story when it comes to something like rain. However, this really comes down to preference. If you're not big on hearing rain landing on your roof, then you should consider a tiled roof. If, however, you enjoy the sound of rain (which many do as it helps relax them), then a metal roof may be better suited for you.

Insulation

When it comes to keeping the heat out, both tiled and metal roofs are comparable in how well they insulate your house. If you want to reflect the heat, you'll want to choose a brighter colour. If you want to absorb heat (such as when you live in a cooler part of Australia), you'll want to opt for a darker colour. Besides this choice, you're looking at similar insulation capabilities, with tiled roofs only edging ahead by a small margin. If you want to improve the insulation of your home, you'll have to consider additional options.

Repair Costs

It's hard to give a one-size-fits-all summary to the costs of roof repairs, even between different materials. There are certain repair/removal jobs that will cost more, but these relate more to things such as the removal and replacement of an asbestos roof or unique costs that may occur if your roof has hard to access areas. To keep it general, though, the average roofing company may charge a little more for repairs related to metal roofing. However, again, this is a case-by-case basis and the cost difference is often not that substantial.
