The History of Tile Roofs in Australia

Tile roofing is a popular choice in Australia because tiles are strong, durable, and affordable. They are also well-suited to our climate and can withstand bushfires and cyclones.

Tile roofing has been a part of our homes for generations. In this blog, we’re sharing a brief history of tile roofs in Australia.

Early Days

Terracotta roof tiles were first invented in the 1200s in China and the Middle East. The idea spread to Europe, and by 1477 King Edward IV passed a law to mandate the size of clay tiles. This size is still the current British standard.

Terracotta Roof Tiles in Australia

In 1892, an Australian company Wunderlich began importing terracotta roof tiles from France. These were a great quality tile that can still be found on houses today. Then, when World War 1 put a stop to this importation, Wunderlich began to manufacture their own tiles here in Australia.

Concrete Roof Tiles

Concrete roof tiles began to be manufactured in Australia in the 1940s. These were a popular choice because they were durable and low cost. By the 1970s, concrete roof tiles became the most common roofing material.

Painted Roof Tiles

During the 1970s-80s, as paint technology got better, roofing companies began painting tile roofs. This helped to give faded roofs a new life. Painting tile roofs also helps them to be more durable against weather conditions.

Today

Roof tiles remain a popular roofing choice today. They are still one of the most durable and cost effective roofing materials in the market.
