Metal Roofing: The Biggest Myths Exposed

There is quite a bit of misinformation surrounding metal roofing.

At Roo Roofing, we’re here to expose the lies and tell you the value in installing a quality metal roof.

So what are the myths people are believing?

#1 Metal Roofs Attract Lightning

It is easy to understand why so many people believe this misconception, because metal does conduct lightning, it doesn’t attract it.

Rather, lightning will go toward the highest point in the area that has a direct path to the ground. Lightning has no reason to strike a metal roof, as it is not grounded.

This means that a metal roof is no more likely to be struck by lightning than any other roofing material.

#2 You Can’t Walk On A Metal Roof

If you need to clean your gutters or check on your solar panels, you shouldn’t be afraid to walk on your roof.

Metal roofs may be slightly more slippery than other roofing types but should be just as safe to walk on, provided you take the necessary precautions.

To be safe, you can talk to your roofing contractor to understand exactly what you need to do to walk on your roof in a safe manner.

#3 They’ll Rust!

As the purpose of your roof is to protect you from the elements, it is safe to assume that it will come into contact with a bit of water.

As a result, an initial assumption is that rust is inevitable if your roof is metal.

However, modern metal roofs are coated with protective materials to ensure that this doesn’t happen and it will remain pristine for years to come.

#4 A Metal Roof Will Heat Up Your House

In the sunny state of Queensland, it’s understandable to be wary of anything that might have the potential to make it hotter than it already is inside your home.

However, metal will actually deflect the sun’s thermal radiation, rather than absorbing and conducting it.

In many cases, homes with metal roofs are actually cooler than ones with other materials, provided they are properly insulated.
