What makes a beautiful roof? Certainly what it is made of is the leading factor, but is there a way to up the aesthetic factor? In this post, we look at some roofs that have added character and style - all thanks to roof decorations.
A stand-out factor of any roof is it’s colour. As a general rule by many house designers (although, you don’t necessarily have to follow this) is that roof and gutters should be the same colour. At Roo Roofing, we offer colorbond roofs and gutters. With its crisp, clean lines, roofing made from colorbond steel can create an attractive roof that works well with most home designs including traditional styles, contemporary designs and everything in between.
Roof ornaments, just like the clay tile, have a long tradition. Fired clay figures were adorning roofs across China as early as AD 618. Whilst in the past these symbols were thought to have the ability to protect against life’s adversities, nowadays the decorative aspect is the focus. They don't just have to be made of clay, they can also come made of copper, steel etc.
This ornament is placed at the apex of a roof. Fox example, the ridge cock atop of Farmer’s houses - in the past owners adorned their roofs with a ridge cock are they were considered a lucky charm and protector of the house. It was seen as a symbol of vigilance, and keep fire of the house and the farmyard. In addition, it was also considered a symbol of fertility. In some countries, its mounting on the roof was not allowed unless the first son was born.
