Asbestos Roof Guttering - The Dangers

Asbestos was a very popular roofing material in Brisbane, until it was banned due to health concerns. This means if you have an older home, it’s highly likely to have asbestos in its roof.

If your roof or gutters are made of asbestos, you may be wondering if it’s dangerous for your family’s health.

The good news is that simply living or working in a building containing asbestos is not dangerous as long as the asbestos is in good condition.

The danger comes when the asbestos is damaged or disturbed and its fibres are released. When you breathe in these fibres, this can damage your lungs, leading to serious health conditions in the long term.

Remember, if your roof gutters are in good condition, then there’s nothing to worry about. Here are some signs that your asbestos gutters have become potentially dangerous.

Brittle

If your gutters have become brittle or are starting to disintegrate, this can cause the asbestos fibres to be released into the air. Dust particles can collect in your gutters, and then become airborne by the wind.

Weathered

Over time, your gutters can start to deteriorate from exposure to the weather. Especially if you live in a stormy area like Brisbane, your gutters can be subject to heavy rains, lightning, debris and strong winds, which can weaken them. Then, your gutters can break off into pieces during the next storm, releasing dangerous particles.

Flaking Paint

If the paint on your gutters is starting to flake off, this means that they won’t be protected from the elements. Without adequate paint, your gutters will be exposed to the elements. This can make them more likely to break down and release their toxic fibres.

Overgrown

If your gutters are overgrown by weeds, shrubs or trees, this can cause them to deteriorate faster. This can also cause dust particles to be released into the air, making it dangerous for you to do any pruning.

Should I get my asbestos gutters replaced?

Although getting your asbestos roof and gutters replaced is expensive, it’s well worth it for the benefits. Here are some reasons why you should get your roof replaced:

  • The more weathered your roof gets, the more likely it is to deteriorate and become harmful to your health
  • Having an asbestos roof can make your home more difficult to sell
  • Homes with asbestos roofs are harder and more expensive to insure
  • Replacing your roof can add value to your home
