5 Tips for maintaining your gutters and downpipes

Overflowing gutters, clogged up downpipes, problems with your roof system...they’re all a headache you certainly don’t want. Fortunately, keeping your gutters and downpipes need not be a draining affair. In this post, we share some tips on how to maintain your gutters and downpipes in Brisbane - saving you time, money and headaches later on.Roo-GutterGuard.jpg

Gutter Guards

A plastic or steel mesh which sits over your gutters prevents leaves and other debris entering. Overflowing gutters can lead to flooded ceilings, damaged roof timbers, saturation of internal walls and damage to your property’s foundations. If you choose not to use a gutter guard, then it’s important that you inspect your gutter every few months to see if any blockage-causing debris has made its way in there.

Gutter Straps

Keep an eye on your gutter straps. Make sure that they are all nailed down, if any have loosened, make sure to re-nail them. If any are damaged or broken, replace them immediately.

Cut back overhanging trees

Trees shed leaves, and thus create more debris for your gutters - check how close trees are to your home and cut back or re-plant further away if necessary.

Unblock at the shoe and swan neck of your downpipes

Scoop any debris first, then if you find you have a flooded downpipe, blast stubborn debris downwards with a hose and clear your pipes, or disassemble parts where they may be blockages. Make sure to have a bucket or tray situated at the bottom of your downpipe or underneath the part you’re cleaning out.

Search for leaks and corrosion

Check your roof, gutters and downpipes during and after storms. Deterioration to roofs and gutters can occur especially during storms. When cleaning out debris make sure to wear thick glove and protective eyewear to avoid cuts to hands and any debris from entering your eyes. If your gutters and downpipes have been cleared and cleaned and there are signs of leaks then it is likely that your gutters and downpipes require replacement. Roo Roofing offer a number of services which include gutter repairs/replacements, gutter guard installation, and downpipe replacements and installation.
