Roof damage: 6 known culprits

There are several factors (chiefly natural) that can contribute to roof damage.

Identifying these causes is key in knowing when it may be worth checking your roof to see if it has sustained any damage - be it minor or major. In this blog, we've listed six common culprits worth accounting for.

1. Rain

Rain, along with many other nature-related factors, can play a role in the damage your roof sustains. While a roof that's in good condition shouldn't suffer too much from a downpour, roofs with any level of damage or wear and tear can be a different story. All it takes is one seemingly negligible crack or gap for rain to seep inside and damage not just the roof, but the ceiling space and even the ceilings or walls of your home.

2. The sun

Modern-day roofs are built to be resistant to the sun's intensity, but this is another case of what can happen if your roof already has some other form of damage. Roofs that are in a slightly undesirable state can suffer when the sun is intense (like it often is here in Brisbane), and the result can be things such as general weakening and the roof becoming more brittle - this is especially true when talking about tiled roofs.

3. Hail

As far as natural risks go, hail is one that sits a little higher up than the likes of rain and intensely sunny days. Unlike the above two, hail can actively present a risk to any type of roof - regardless of whether it's well maintained or not. Because, in the end, while roofs are certainly strong, a large piece of hail falling from the sky can cause damage - be it a dent, crack or actual hole.

It was only last year that Brisbane was hit by a massive hail storm that had cars written off, smashed in thick panes of office glass and severely damaged roofs. After a hail storm has passed, we suggest checking out your roof - just be careful and make sure to wait until it dries out.

4. Strong winds

Again, it's another natural risk, but strong winds is another that can be classed more in the same level of risk as hail. While we don't get them all the time, Brisbane does occasionally face extremely strong - sometimes cyclonic - winds. At the right speed and angle, strong winds can damage even the strongest roofs out there. This can result in tiles coming loose or metal roofs being uplifted (be it partially or otherwise).

5. Leaks

Leaks are a form of roof damage on their own, but they can also pave the way for more serious problems down the road. A leak means that water can seep inside your roof (such as during the aforementioned bouts of rain), and this can lead to further damage. Over time, internal water damage to your home's roof frame can compromise the entire foundation of your roof. If you believe you might have a leak, head up and check your ceiling space for any leaks during the next bout of steady rain; or you can simulate it by having someone spray water onto the roof with a hose.

6. Age, wear and tear

One inevitable factor that will ultimately lead to a roof sustaining damage is general ageing and wear and tear. There is, of course, nothing you can do to stop a roof from getting older, but keeping an eye on your roof for any signs of damage is the best approach. If you notice something that may require repairs or a replacement, get it done straight away - it till allow your roof to have a longer life and will cost you less in the long run.
