Outdoor Lighting: 4 Key Tips

Your home's outdoor lighting can play a big role in how inviting and warm it looks and feels to those who come by to visit. Good lighting isn't hard to achieve, it just takes some planning and proper consideration. In this blog, we've put together four key tips to help you ensure your outdoor lighting is a welcomed focal point of your home.

Make sure you have lighting around your front door

Of all the entrances to your house, having ligthing around your front door is certainly important. With one or two well-positioned lights, you can illuminate the door and nearby steps or possible elevations (e.g. the exterior entrance point may be raised a foot or two even if you have no stairs). It's best to have the lights positioned above the average head level, so maybe aim for about 2.5 to 3 metres up. This reduces glare and helps prevent the issue of the lights shining directly into anyone's eyes.

Be mindful of brightness

Different outdoor lights serve different functions and that means you'll need to account for how bright they are. In an outdoor entertaining space, for example, you'll want the lighting to have a warmth to it but to not be excessively bright as this can be too intense on your vision and the vision of others. The lighting's main purpose should be that it's enough so you can see each other and your meals/snacks, but it doesn't have to be any brighter than that.

For lights that are illuminating paths or more expansive areas (e.g. you have a large backyard), you may want these to a bit brighter or to have a more flood-like effect. You can still achieve this a lighting colour that is soft or cool in nature, but it simply helps illuminate a broader space.

Embrace solar

If you want a few soft lights around the front or backyard, then solar-powered lights are a great option. There's an abundance of options these days, from more traditional light designs to the more whimsical/fantastical options of mushroom houses, angels, butterflies, flowers, and so on. Given that much of Australia receives plenty of sunlight throughout the year, solar-powered lights are a much more viable option here than they may be in other countries.

Extra touches

Don't forget to add your own extra personal touches to your outdoor lighting. This could be in the form of festooning fairy lights across your patio, investing in LED lights for your pool (including ones with ever-changing colours), or getting in the spirit for different seasonal celebrations - don't forget that Halloween's almost here and Christmas won't be far behind. These touches will help inject your personality into the property and make it stand out from others.
