Celebrating Melbourne Cup at home

Next Tuesday, most Australians will likely stop what they're doing to watch the race that stops the nation. While many may spend their time celebrating the Melbourne Cup at an official event, there's also the great option of having a Melbourne Cup celebration at home. If you choose to do so, there are a few basics to account for, though.

The Melbourne Cup sweep

Even if all of your attendees have made their own bets, don't forget to have a little home sweep. It doesn't have to be anything big - just a few dollars for a lucky dip draw. Of course, if someone doesn't want to participate, don't force them to. Everyone's there to have a good time, regardless of whether they're betting on the races or not.

Food and drinks

It's Melbourne Cup, so naturally people aren't going to want to be eating and drinking. Drinks of the alcoholic variety are certainly necessary (at least beers and wine), but don't forget to have non-alcohol options for those who are designated drivers or simply don't drink alcohol.

In terms of food, you'll want variety as well. At a house party, nibblies are good, but make sure you'll be serving at least one substantial meal during the day (probably just an hour before the race itself). And don't forget to account for dietary needs or preferences. For example, you may have friends or family who have coeliac disease or are vegetarian/vegan. So just be mindful of these additional needs.

A good entertaining space

The enjoyment of any party can be somewhat dampened if the entertaining space is too small. Whether you're holding the main entertainment indoors or outdoors, make sure there's enough room for everyone. If that means you need to move furniture around or link your indoor and outdoor spaces, so be it.

A TV, of course

A Melbourne Cup without a TV is like a car without an engine. Make sure you've got a TV set up and ready for main race and, if possible, place it in a spot where everyone will be able to watch the race without having to struggle to see th screen (e.g. no tippy-toeing or awkward peering between shoulders).
