Brisbane's top Christmas events

Christmas Day is less than a month away, with the festive season now into full swing. It's an exciting time for many, particularly kids or those who are kids at heart. For those of you who live in Brisbane or will be visiting Brisbane during the festive season, the good news is there is plenty to see and do from now until Christmas Day itself. In today's blog, we're listing some of the key Christmas events you can get involved in throughout the city.

The Lighting of the Christmas Tree: Friday, 27 November 2015 - 6.30pm

For many, Christmas officially arrives the moment they light up the Christmas tree. For Brisbane city this year, that day falls on Friday, 27 November (tomorrow at the time of writing). If you'd like to see the city's massive tree illuminate for the very first time of the 2015 season, then make sure you're at King George Square by 6.30pm.

The IGA Lord Mayor's Christmas Carols: Saturday, 12 December - 5pm

The Lord Mayor's Christmas Carols have been around for years and mark one of the best annual celebrations for the river city. Whether you love singing along or just want to have a great night out with the family, this event has got you covered. Taking place at Riverstage next to the Queensland University of Technology, the Carols starts at 5pm and run until 9.15pm. Some of the acts, according to the Brisbane City Council site, include:

  • Star soprano, Mirusia
  • Australian country music artist, Troy Cassar-Daley
  • Polo from New York rhythm and blues beat boxing a cappella group, Naturally 7
  • Music theatre star, Rachael Beck
  • Aria Award winning songstress, Christine Anu
  • ABC Kids premiere band for children, Lah Lah
  • Les Miserables performer, Patrice Tipoki
  • The Voice Kids 2014 winner, Alexa Curtis
  • Torres Strait Islander guitarist, Chris Tamwoy

Myer Christmas Parade & Pantomime: 11 December to 20 December - 6.30pm every day

Who doesn't love a parade? Well, Daria Morgendorffer didn't, but she's an exception to the rule. From Friday 11 December until Sunday 20 December, Myer will be hosting its usual Christmas Parade and Pantomime at 6.30pm ever day. This gives you 10 days to witness the parade for yourself or, if you really love a parade, you could go every single night. It runs throughout Queen Street Mall and King George Square.

Also, don't forget to check out Christmas-themed store front displays at the Myer Centre during this time.

Gold Lotto City Hall Light Spectacular: 11 December to 24 December

Along with the 10-day parade, there's also 14 days of the City Hall Light Spectacular, running from Friday 11 December until Thursday 24 December. Past years have been undeniably magical, and 2015 is sure to continue this trend. The light spectacular runs from 7.30pm until midnight every night at 15 minute intervals. Simply head to King George Square to be part of the experience.
