10 Awesome Architectural Achievements

Here at Roo Roofing, we love it when we see a house or commercial building with a nicely designed and maintained roof.

However, there are also those times where we enjoy marvelling at those designs that truly go beyond the norm. Whether it’s in roof design or the overall architectural uniqueness of these buildings, here are 10 weird and wonderful architectural achievements we love.

1. Eden Project

Located in Cornwall, England, the Eden Project contains numerous gardens and biomes. Along with this, special events, exhibitions and live music all appear. While this isn’t just one building, the mix of unique architecture and landscaping makes this place stand out for us.

2. Pabellon de Aragon

Coming from the main city of Zaragoza in Aragon, Spain, the Pabellon de Aragon translates to the Flag of Aragon. It was one the main buildings of the 2008 Expo that took place in the city and was designed to to be shaped like a wicker basket. All we know is it’s a very fascinating building.

3. The Basket Building

As the name suggests, the Basket Building is known for looking exactly like a massive basket. Discoverable if you find yourself travelling down a highway in central Ohio, this building is actually the head quarters of a company called Longaberger who specialise in making baskets. Wonder if there are little knotted holes in the roof...

4. Mountain Dwellings

Designed by BIG Architects, these 80 single-family units are located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Each unit is designed with a green roof which acts doubly as the garden for the unit above. Through their positioning, no unit owner is able to see the unit directly below or above them, and walls exist on both sides which ensures privacy. We personally love the incorporation of green roofs to act both as roofs and gardens.

5. Sydney Opera House

Of course we couldn’t do a list without including one example of great Australian architecture. Not much has to be said about our beloved Sydney Opera House other than it’s easily one of the most iconic and uniquely-designed buildings Australia has ever had.

6. The Kunsthaus Graz

Located in Graz, Austria, the Kunsthaus opened its doors back in 2003. Mainly a building where exhibitions are held, it looks massive from the outside. However, according to visitors, the building is actually quite small inside. Still, the oddity of its design is eye-catching.

7. Kansas City Public Library

Really, what else can be said about this building that the photo doesn’t already tell? This isn’t a building that’s so much about roof design as it is pure design. A great way to make it obvious that you’re building is the public library. Located in Missouri, USA.

8. The Crooked House

Located in downtown Sopot, Poland, the Crooked House (Krzywy Domek) is a huge tourist spot. Inside it houses restaurants, shops and bars. We can’t help but admire how they made a building with such an unusual roof and overall design and managed to spare itself any issues.

9. Upside Down House

Located in Szymbark, Poland, the Upside Down House has become a massive tourist attraction. It took builders 114 days to build the house, taking breaks on occasion due to actual dizziness. It was built to symbolise the absurdity of life and, from what we’ve heard, those who go inside become very disorientated. Of course, we’re not used to walking on the roof.

10. Cubic houses

We decided to save the best - or at least what we consider the most unique - for last. Located in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands. They were the architectural vision of Piet Blom, who wanted to create a form of high density housing that felt like a representative forest of houses. So if you’re wondering, yes, you can live in them.
