How To Design Your Backyard Around Your Pool

Planning your outdoor areas to also incorporate your pool to create a cohesive design? In this post, we share some considerations and design ideas to create a beautiful outdoor living space.

Existing features: Consider the current layout - the position of your building/s, underground services, pool design and pool position. If feasible, some utilities can be relocated or your landscaping can take into account these existing features.  With careful planning, you can turn your pool & the surrounding landscape into a functional outdoor living area where you can cook, entertain friends & family, and find comfort when you want to chill out.

Pool placement: If you haven’t already built a pool in your outdoors, try to build the pool in an area that won’t section off a large area of your backyard, but also build it in an area where it’s most visible from your home’s living areas so that you can keep an eye on the kids or view it as a showpiece.

Pool fencing: Glass fence panels placed at least a metre from the pool’s edge will allow comfortable access around your pool and minimise dry salt stains resulting from splashing. Pool fencing is also a safety feature, keeping young children from jumping in unattended.

Create shade: Shade cloths or a large umbrella are a great idea to ensure your pool is well covered during the warmer months. The Australian sun can get extremely hot during the summer period so ensuring your pool is covered adequately is very important.

BBQ area: There’s a strong relationship between your kitchen and outdoor eating spaces. For convenience locate your outdoor living and BBQ area is in close proximity to the kitchen. Preferably, position outdoor living areas to provide or take advantage of afternoon shade.

Clothesline, rubbish bins: Locate these facilities in discrete service areas away from your line of sight (or hide them in your line of sight).

Planting around your pool: Plants located in the splash zone will more likely flourish if selected on the basis of their resistance to chemicals and saline water. Choose plants that guarantee lower weekly maintenance by avoiding the cultivation of large lead plants and messy eucalyptus trees because they can quickly block your skimmer basket and filtration system. Avoid plants that produce thorns or attract bees and wasps.

Furniture positioning: Lounges, pots, candles, tables etc. are all important when it comes to placement giving your space an overall look and feel. Just like you would arrange furniture indoors, take a moment to review the flow and logistics of when you have positioned your outdoor furniture.

Revamp with a theme: Did you know that changing small details can make a huge difference? For example, changing your outdoor cushions with a new style can create a whole new look.

Lighting: Lighting installations can dramatically enhance a backyard’s landscape at night. But it is difficult to find the right mix of colours and degree of lighting intensity if you do not integrate your lighting landscape design with your outdoor and pool plan.

Privacy: From rock walls to trees and shrubs, pick the right kind of dividers and visual screeners that will protect you from the prying eyes of neighbours or visitors.

Pagodas: Continue your architectural theme with outdoor pagodas or gazebos, adding a burst of colour and another area to entertain and relax.
