In this post, we take a closer look at some of Australia’s most interesting residential roofs, starting of course in Brisbane…
Located on the Brisbane Corso, fronting the Brisbane river, is the Push Residence. Responding to the narrow site conditions, this home compliments the Northern views and provide rooms at the front with view of the river. It has a high-level, wedge-shaped roof which floats lightly over the upper floor and extensive glazing ensures a strong connection to the river and view beyond.
Moving on down south of Brisbane, we find ourselves eyeing a beautiful home in Byron Bay, New South Wales. The lightweight beach house features a series of fabric roof structures designed to provide soft lighting throughout the building reminiscent of a campsite.
Next, with another unique roof, is the Applecross Residence, found in Western Australia. Natural light filters through the translucent roof structure and timber battened ceilings. This house engages with the site, context and climate with sustainable design considerations such as cross-flow ventilation and passive solar heating.
Travelling South to Victoria, we come across the beautiful Barwon Heads House. The roof is a mechanism for tempering the internal environment of the house and acts like a tent-like enclosure as it envelopes over the interior space, providing shelter, solar control, and natural ventilation. In Summer, the large roof overhang provides shade, and in Winter, sunlight is allowed into the interior through incisions in the roof.
Lastly, we’d like to share with you a home also found in Victoria, The Avenel House. This home is very eco-friendly, much thanks to it’s roof, with custom designed wind scoops positioned on the roof and the ability to harvest water from the roof slope.
