7 of Australia’s Most Unique Houses

Australia is known for it’s Queenslanders and single-storey brick homes, but there are architects and builders all over the country that have taken their designs one step further than the average.

These are 7 of the best unique and unusual homes from all over Australia:

1. Everingham Rotating House

This home doesn’t appear to unusual from the outside, but it’s what happens within that’s unique. Luke Everingham had to rebuild his house Wingham, NSW property and wanted to take advantage of the spectacular views. So he built a house that rotates.

The entire structure weighs around 50 tonnes, and can rotate 360º if and when desired to take in the surrounding views. The octagonal design made construction quite easy and the 24m diameter house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an office and a huge meals/dining/entertainment area.

2. Drew House

This unusual holiday house was created at Seventeen Seventy just south of Gladstone in Queensland. It was designed as a “luxury campsite” for photographer Marian Drew and her family. The pod-like shape takes inspiration from sugar mills, and makes for a truly inspiring “camping” experience.

3. Hill House

Living up to its name, the Hill House was designed to counteract the the shaded backyard of the property, which was in shadow for most of the year. Located in Melbourne’s Northern suburbs, the home takes the backyard up and over the structure of the buildings, extending the green space and making the most of the sun.

4. Dome House

Is this the kind of house you would want to give your mum? That’s exactly what architect Debbie Ryan did with this unique dome-shaped house.

Situated in Hawthorn, Victoria, the house appears as a giant, buried sphere, with sections removed to create jutting angles and a mix of shapes. The roof is one of the most complex in Australia.

5. Holman House

Sitting precariously on the cliffs at Dover Heights in Sydney, this
remarkable house has even more remarkable views. Featuring a complex series of fluid living spaces, the rough stone walls on the exterior are meant to act as an extension of the 70 metre white cliffs below.

Maybe not a great choice if you are afraid of heights, but unique nonetheless.

6. Beached House

This
beach house in Western Port in Victoria was designed to give the sense that it just washed ashore from the ocean. With unique slanted roof designs and unusual angles, this fairly low-set house fits in with the surrounding landscape.

7. Klein Bottle House

This truly unique home is a holiday house, situated on the Mornington Peninsula, 1.5 hrs drive from Melbourne. The house revolves around a central courtyard, a grand regal stair connecting all the levels. It is situated in the tee-trees on a sand dune, within a stone’s throw to the beach.

What began as a playful spiral or shell like building, developed into a more complex spiral, taking inspiration from the Klein bottle but adapting it into an origami shape. The Klein bottle is an abstract shape in mathematics, an example of a non-orientable surface. The concept is quite complex, so you can read up about it here.
