5 ways to avoid damage to your roof this holiday season

It’s that time of year again and while most Aussies aren’t as into Christmas decorations as some of our American friends, there are a few of us who go all out to decorate the house (the roof to be specific) with a few streets that we all go to visit to see what is going on this year. Which leads us to this week’s post - 5 ways to avoid damage to your roof this holiday season.

As you’ll see a lot of these tips seem like common sense - but roof damage has happened! So here are a few reminders when setting up your roof decorations:

Check for power lines and cables overhead

Keep an eye out for overhead cables (powerlines or otherwise) this way you can avoid any Christmas mishaps. Flammable items like inflatable reindeer or an abundance of fairy lights are ok to add to your roof, but if they’re touching cables they become an instant fire hazard.

Test twinkling lights and electrical items

Testing electric decorations and lights saves your time, energy and your roof! You don’t want to set it all up to find out the lights don’t even work! Checking and inspecting your lights will stop any unnecessary work and prevent any fire hazards. Check the cord, bulbs and the plug for maximum safety.

Consider the load

Lights are one thing (which we’ll go into more depth in our next blog post) but if you also want to put a seasonal structure on your roof, such as a Santa sleigh, you’ll need to consider your roof’s load-bearing capacity.

Secure rooftop displays

Rooftop displays are a staple in many neighbourhoods but that’s exactly what you should avoid – staples! Tack down decorations properly to prevent things flying off when it's windy in summer or with an impending storm wreaking havoc. You would think that was the purpose for staples in the first place, but instead you can just end up with hundred of holes (could lead to leaks) in your roof!

Don’t rush the Christmas decoration take-down

When Christmas is over and you’re ready to take down your decorations, make sure you have a plan on what you’re going to do first and do it slowly! Pulling down your decorations in a hurry is a surefire way to cause damage to your roof. If you take down the huge plastic Santa on your roof but only half of the fastenings have been undone, it could topple and cause further damage.
