5 Dumb Things People Do (And Don’t Do) To Their Roofs

Some things you can’t control, like a cyclone or heavy storm, but there are a few things within your control that could actually be causing your roof more harm than good.

Here are 5 things that people do (and don’t do) that put their roof at risk.

1. Cleaning it with a pressure hose

If you're getting a build up of moss, algae or mould, it might seem like a bright idea to get the high-pressure water hose out and spray the problem away. But if you don’t know what you’re doing, you might be causing more damage.

The intense jet of water can take the top layer of protectant off your roofing material, be it metal, decramastic, terracotta, or concrete, and actually make it more susceptible to decay. It's better to be safe than sorry, so ask a professional for help.

2. Not trimming overhanging trees

Trees can drop limbs at any time, so it's important to trim branches that overhang or are too close to your house.

If branches are touching your roof, they can also wear away at your roofing material by constant brushing against it. This can lead to holes and leaks.

It’s particularly important in Queensland to trim your trees in preparation for storm season, as strong winds and rain mean trees are more likely to drop limbs.

That leads us into our next point...

3. Not preparing for storm season

Trimming trees is only one step in storm preparation, you should be preparing your roof for heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and destructive weather.

Make sure you regularly clean out your gutters, keep an eye for leaks and damage, check your downpipes and drainage, and make sure you monitor the structural integrity.

4. Pulling up shingles to check for leaks

It might be tempting to investigate problems or leaks, but it can be a delicate process and you could unintentionally cause more damage.

Pulling up shingles is never a good idea, even if you think you might be able to fix the leak. It’s difficult to put the shingles back into place and you might end up creating a leak where there wasn’t one before.

5. Mounting satellite dishes and solar panels themselves

Again, if you’re not sure what you’re doing, it's a good idea to get a professional to change or install things on your roof. The holes and screws you might use to adhere a satellite dish down can allow moisture into the small areas and cause damage.

Solar panels are a great idea to save money on your electricity bill, but installing them yourself if not a great idea. Get the solar company or a professional to install them to avoid unnecessary damage.
